"But I am not, she thought. I am a casual companion, that is all; an incidental adjunct."
I started reading this TWO YEARS ago. While I loved McCall Smith's Ladies No. 1 Detective series, I initially found this book to be a bit slow/ boring and so I put it aside. I picked it up again a couple of weeks ago and this time, I found it to be a charming, quiet little book. It's more of a character study of the intesecting lives of multiple interesting characters, most of whom live in the same apartment building. McCall Smith writes beautifully and I enjoy the fact that his vocabulary is challenging. Call me crazy, but I actually like having to use a dictionary when reading a book. I'm also impressed by McCAll Smith's ability to write so well from a female point of view. This is the perfect sort of book for a vactiony summer read.
